SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: Quartz “Superman Memory Crystal”

Quartz crystals have the potential to store a vast amount of data (as energy) for an unlimited amount of time due to their unique physical and chemical properties. This is because quartz is a highly stable material and can hold a charge for a long time without losing its integrity.

In 2013 scientists at Southampton University demonstrated the ability to store data in fused silica, a non-crystalline form of silicon dioxide that’s found in quartz crystals, sand and other materials.

They used energy in the form of unpolarised light from an ultrafast laser, to encode 300 kb of digital data onto a small disk of fused silica glass that is reliable for billions of years. They dubbed this “5D Superman memory crystal“.

The tiny quartz discs store their data as laser-etched nanostructures in the crystal. The structures alter the way light travels through the glass, allowing the data to be read by special optical devices.

Since then, documents such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Bible and the Magna Carta, have also been stored in similar small discs of quartz glass.

Hitachi and Microsoft have researched quartz glass-based optical storage techniques, the latter under the name Project Silica.
